Dear Friends, I have always been amazed at how quickly little children pick up just about everything they learn from the adults around them. I had this truth driven home to me last month while I was babysitting my grandson Sam. We were out in our backyard and I thought I’d demonstrate how “important” it is to understand that the trees are our friends. I went up to our big white oak and gave it a hug. Sam’s a quick learner and he went over to the tree and gave it a hug as well. I thought it was a cute thing but didn’t give much more thought to it. The next week my daughter took Sam to the “Boo at
the Zoo.” Sam was not very much interested in looking at the animals but
every tree he saw he had to go over and give it a hug. Hugging trees is just a small thing. (And I’m well aware of the fact that many of you probably think I’m a little “loony” in doing this.) I wonder, however, how many other “small things” we do that kids pick up on. The foundation in all of our lives was laid out when we were very little, picking up on all the things that the older people around us did. What an awesome privilege and responsibility we have to model a life full of God’s love to everyone around us. Love - your friend, Don
