Friends,

The older I get, the older my friends get.  The older my friends get, the higher the percentage of them start to move down south or out west because they simply can't take the long and gray winters.  And at 57 I must reluctantly admit that I understand the yearning to move to a warmer climate.  However, I personally have no longing at this point in time to make such a move.  I learned a long time ago that you "can't eat the weather or eat the view." If you have good friends and a job you love (and a great church family) not much else matters.

Nine months a year I can do outside projects, but in the bleak winter months (with the exception of cross-country skiing and snow shoveling) I'm forced to stay inside.  So, I develop a number of inside projects to work on. Joan would tell you I'm addicted to projects and she's probably right, however, I look at it as a positive addiction.   The past two winters, my "addiction of choice” has been quilting.  Attached are a couple of shots of this winter's project - a "triple iris chain" traditional pattern with more than 10,000 1-inch squares.

Unfortunately, I finished it last week and there's still snow on the ground - just in time for me to start tapping the maple trees at the cabin.
